Day 8: Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

We woke up on the floor again today. This is starting to not be so fun. We went down to the Kamper Kitchen to boil some water and had coffee and oatmeal. We tried to re-repair the air mattress. We loaded up and headed north to Sturgis. We have to drive right by Mt. Rushmore to get anywhere east.

Devin was needing a new front tire so we stopped in Rapid City (about halfway) at the HD dealer to see about getting a new one. We went through the 'express lane' (tires & oil only) and the wait was going to be 4 hours....so we went on up to Sturgis. We stopped at a vendor alongside the road (he wanted to look at seats) and then into Sturgis. The vendor showed us the easy way to get into town, we took it, and surprisingly found a parking spot right away, only 1 block off main street. I've never seen so many bikes. Bikes & people everywhere. We met up with our friends and walked around. We saw a daredevil bike show with all the flips and stuff. Then Dev & I just walked around and shopped. I got shirts and a hair wrap (it's a piece of leather you put around your ponytail so that your hair doesn't become a tangled mess while you're riding). We ate Indian Tacos...which is all your taco toppings on top what seems to be a deep fried tortilla but fluffier. There are a lot of vendors, much like a fair. Other than that you just look at the bikes.

After a long day we headed back south towards our campground. On our way we stopped at Dollar Tree and Wal-Mart. We got some epoxy type glue (made by the Super-Glue company) and duct tape. We got a smoke sausage for dinner and some better sunscreen (the other runs in Devins eyes).

This was the view on the way home...

When we got back we repaired the mattress AGAIN. It had to set for 3 hours so we took our sausage and potatoes, corn, & tomatoes from the other day down to the Kamper's Kitchen. We grilled and had that with sliced tomato. We were so full we couldn't eat it all. Devin even opted out of the ice cream he had been wanting all day.

The stars are just as bright and beautiful as they can be out here. The air is clean and crisp. The minerals in the rocks are in the dust and you can see little flecks sparkle in the air throughout the day. It is certainly a place that only God could make.

Today we traveled 128.6 miles for a total of  2095.1 miles across America

  1. Devin, It sounds like you need to find a motorcycle shop that gives away an air mattress with every new tire purchase. Just a suggestion. Dad
