We got up at a decent hour and after getting ready went and
got donuts from a well-reviewed place on Yelp. First we stopped at a Love’s
where Devin got some coffee (and I got hit on by Carlos) and a travel coffee
mug that fits perfectly in the new bike cup holder he got at Sturgis. We were
glad to be up early to beat the sun as we headed the 100 miles west to the
Bonneville Salt Flats. We saw the Great Salt Lake as we went by and a Morton
(as well as other) salt factory. The ride out was long and boring…
Eventually we made it to the rest area just 10 miles east of
Wendover. This rest area was put in just for people to stop and see the salt
flats. We walked out onto it & tasted it. Yep, salty. Even had a Salty Dog.
The first thing Devin said was “Now all we need is a lot of pretzels.”
Speedweek was going on so we went the few miles further to
drive onto the flats. We saw lots of crazy cars on the way out there. Now we
knew they charged a fee, and when we started this trip we agreed we weren’t going
to hold back, there’d be no limits to these once in a lifetime opportunities.
We made it to the entrance area where they told us the fee was $30. We found
our limit. We had only wanted to be there about 30 minutes so $1 a minute was a
little steep for us. We headed back to Salt Lake City.
We ate at Arby’s and came to the campground where I made a
few work calls. We then headed into downtown SLC to Temple Square, the big area
with lots of Mormon stuff. Anyway we went to the Family History Center, a library
full of genealogy records. We spent around 2 hours looking up stuff on our
families…it was actually pretty neat. There was a young girl next to me
chatting me up. She’s getting married on Thursday at the Mormon temple. She
asked if we had any advice (‘don’t fight’) and was really interested in us. A
very nice young girl…
After the library closed we came back to camp and then went
to the grocery store to get dinner. BEST GROCERY STORE EVER. Ok, well it was
pretty close. We were in a heavy latino area and the store was stocked with
Mexican staples. The large assortment of chorizo had Devin in bliss. Queso’s
and chilis and everything. We really enjoyed ourselves. We got some lime
cilantro roasted chicken from the deli, salad and a few other things we needed.
I don’t like to brag but I am a packing pro, and it helped getting it all back
to the tent. We ate at our picnic table and enjoyed just sitting.
We had planned to do laundry and I some work but people kept
coming by and chatting with us. A nice couple from Canada let us in on some
great riding in Washington and the guy next to us talked to Devin and I for
over 30 minutes. By the time we got to laundry it was 9:30. After laundry and
showers it was late. I stayed up working on the blog. Unfortunately it didn't want to cooperate and I gave up about 2am.
Today we rode 267.3 miles for a total of 3845 miles across America.
