We woke up later than we wanted to again today. Devin went and got a haircut and donuts while I stayed back and packed things up. Were getting much better at packing but it still takes a while. As we were leaving town we stopped at the Love's station to get gas, coffee, juice, water and to eat our donuts. It was funny because everyone there was ordering lunch at the attached Arby's.
To get to Shoshone falls you must take the interstate. getting out of SLC was rough...lots of traffic which creates a lot of choppy wind that really beats you up, and the roads were bad too. But once we got past all that it really wasn't that bad. We actually went 185 miles before stopping. We had fries and fried zucchini at Carl's Jr before the 40 miles to the falls.
The falls were beautiful. They are taller than Niagara falls. I always like to look at the stuff people have dropped over the edge. The most interesting was a cane. I had to be careful Mini-B wasn't added to that pile!
The way to Arco was windy and smoky. There's a forest fire near somewhere putting the whole area in a haze. We went through Craters of the Moon National Monument and it was crazy. We're going to go see it better tomorrow. We made it to our destination...Arco, ID. The hills in the back have numbers painted all over them. Each graduating class from the high school paints their year on the rock face since 1920 (according to Wikipedia). The town also boasts the first place to ever be powered by atomic energy. We checked in, ran to the grocery store, came back, set up camp, and cooked hot dogs and mac & cheese. Well we tried anyway, it was crazy windy until the instant our food was done and tent was up then it was nice and calm.
While we were eating I went over to an empty nearby RV spot to charge my computer. There was an RV in the spot next to that and the couple offered to have us come sit by their fire. They also took my computer to charge since the outlet didn't have a standard plug receptacle, only an RV outlet. After we ate we went and sat with them by the fire. They were from Calgary and had also just come from Yellowstone. We sat and talked with them, Rob & Erin, for several hours about several things, including NASCAR in which Rob was also a fan. They were interested in our trip and, like most people we meet, very excited and impressed that we are able to take such a trip. They travel the west US yearly and gave us some tips of where to go particularly in Oregon. It was a really nice night.
Today we traveled 353 miles for a total of 4198.0 miles across America.
