Day 6 (40): Hershey, PA & York, PA

Today is my birthday! The big 2-7. What is a better way to celebrate a birthday than donuts, the sweetest place on Earth, and vacation?

Yesterday was a beautiful day, sunny and in the mid-70s. It made for great walking all over the city. Today was rainy and dreary. We set off with our sights first on Dunkin’ Donuts, because really you must have donuts on your birthday. We kept going and going and going down the road without a DD in sight. To avoid tolls, we went through a small town just outside of the interstate. By this time it had really started to pour down rain. At that moment we spotted a new DD and pulled in. A mad dash into the store and we finally got our precious DD. She even gave me some free munchkins for my birthday. I also got two chocolate covered donuts and a bagel (I was real hungry). We braved the rain again and made it back on the road.

After a lot of miles we eventually made it to Hershey, PA. We went to Chocolate World, where you can take a simulated tour and do a few other activities. We took the ‘tour,’ which was really an amusement ride complete with singing cows. When we left the ‘tour’ we were stopped by a lady who asked us to participate in a survey. She took us back in a room and where we had to taste samples and answer a bunch of questions about the samples. She was really nice and interested about our trip overall.

After the little tour and taste test we walked through their store waiting until the “chocolate tasting” we had bought tickets to. We were anticipating a nice sampling of different chocolates. When we got in there we found that it was just a sampling of marketed chocolates with an actor. It was good, but I wouldn’t have recommended it. It was getting later in the day and there was nothing else we wanted to do there. The town really centers more around the theme park, which we had no interest in and was probably shut down for rain anyway. We later found out that they do have a more ‘refined’ chocolate testing at a different location rather than a tourist-y one, but we opted out because we were pretty chocolat-ed out by this point. We did a quick drive through the town just to check it out (we took the ‘extended (i.e. wrong turn) tour) before heading south to York, PA. We didn’t take any pictures in Hershey.

We got to York and checked into our hotel. Devin then took me out to Olive Garden for my birthday. We went to the Dollar Tree after than so I could get some nail polish and we went back to the hotel and relaxed. It was really a great day, lots of sugar and getting to go to the Dollar Tree (one of my favorite stores) made it an awesome birthday.

Nope…still didn’t keep track of the mileage…
